Young Adults
Here are a few things about government that many, in my generation, seem to agree on.
We don’t have much faith in what we mostly see as “old white guys in charge.” Especially the ones who have pretty well messed up the Country’s government. Worse, they don’t seem able to fix the problems that they caused.
In the last big election, many of my friends voted for Obama. From our perspective, he seemed to be the guy that we could join for a beer. He seemed to be the guy we could best talk with about what was wrong with government.
My generation may have been wrong about that. It’s a little too early to tell. We probably haven’t lived long enough to have the experiences and the learning that our parents and grandparents have gotten.
We’re not savvy about a lot of things – yet. It may be that long-term bad things are happening all around us. Worse, we’re beginning to understand that we’re the ones who will live with the bad decisions and bad results in the future – after you’re gone.
Because we’re younger, we’re not generally good about looking 40 years ahead. Or even 20 years. Or sometimes 20 minutes. But for our children and grandchildren, “somebody better plan ahead and you don’t seem to be doing it. “
We still pretty much think that we know it all – while at the same time we really know that we don’t. We’re still acting like we’re immortal. We’re definitely not thinking about joining AARP - and beyond.
We don’t think about having a job for a lifetime. We do think about marriage, but a lot less about divorce. We can’t yet relate to years of family responsibilities and raising children.
We’re learning about mortgages but it’s hard to grasp what it means being Trillions of Dollars in debt. After all, it’s not my generation’s fault that our Country is out of money. We weren’t the generation that wasted it.
Maybe somebody in government should talk to us in our language. Maybe somebody can show us how we can use our youth and enthusiasm to begin to fix things.
If a Great Government Group can do that, we’re ready to listen. For our own protection AND in our own best interest - we’re ready to get involved.
